Update on COVID-19

March 20, 2020. The virus we know as the Wuhan Virus had been renamed to NCov-19 and then permanently as COVID-19.

It has been 50 days since this post was published and from 171 deaths and 8,242 infections, we now have 9,390 deaths and 230,736 infections. This is very alarming since if we get the average that would be 184.38 deaths per day and 4,449.86 infections per day. Using these same statistics if there will be no abate with the rate we can see a devastating spread in just 2 months, we can expect about 500,000 infections and about 21,000 total deaths.

However, this is not a worst-case scenario. If we take into account the cumulative spread of the virus which is at 8,000 by the end of January and then 80,000 by the end of February, we might expect more than 500,000 by the next 2 months.

Right now, the WORLD IS ON LOCKDOWN, most of it at least. In the Philippines, the whole Luzon is on Enhanced Community Quarantine until April 13. While this is all happening, we are seeing a revival of nature including decrease pollution level, re-emerging of species, repropagation of forests and more. Is this in fact good for all of us in the long run as nature is healing itself from the possible climate meltdown in 10 years?

Wuhan Virus / Novel Corona Virus is Spreading Person-to-Person

Even if you are not from China or did not travel to China you can get infected. Even if you are not yet sick, you might be infected already. News and scientists confirms that the gestation period of the virus is 1-14 days before symptoms even appear.

As of the writing of this blog, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the first case of person-to-person transmission of the Wuhan Virus in the United States. In Japan, there is also a similar case.

Philippines Confirms Case of Novel Corona Virus

The Department of Health (DOH) today confirmed that a 38-year-old female Chinese patient under investigation (PUI) is positive for the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) after her laboratory results arrived today from the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory in Melbourne, Australia. DOH, however, continues to guarantee the public that all necessary precautionary measures are being taken to halt the spread of the virus.

“I assure the public that the Department of Health is on top of this evolving situation. We were able to detect the first confirmed case because of our strong surveillance system, close coordination with World Health Organization and other national agencies, and the utilization of DOH’s decision tool. We are working closely with the hospital where the patient is admitted and have activated the Incident Command System of the said hospital for appropriate management, specifically on infection control, case management, and containment. We are also implementing measures to protect the health staff providing care to these patients,”

Health Secretary Francisco T. Duque
Department of Health (Philippines)

DOH has recorded a total of twenty-nine (29) PUIs – eighteen (18) in Metro Manila, four (4) in Central Visayas, three (3) in Western Visayas, one (1) in MIMAROPA, one (1) in Eastern Visayas, one (1) in Northern Mindanao, and one (1) in Davao. Twenty-three (23) PUIs are currently admitted and five (5) have been discharged but are still under strict monitoring. DOH also reported one PUI mortality.

Judging from the trend of the virus in Japan and other nearby countries, we are expecting the number of cases to increase in the next couple of days.

What Face Mask to Use?

“Wear a face mask ONLY if you have fever, cough, colds, difficulty breathing or other respiratory symptoms. If you are not sick, then a mask is NOT required.”

Dr. Albert Domingo, a World Health Organization (WHO) consultant for Health Systems Strengthening

When I travel outside here in the Philippines, I see different types of masks. Are they all good or do you have to wear a specific type of mask? Well, a netizen has a very good visual answer about it.

Be Healthy and Improve Hygiene

Remember that your body can fight the virus better with a healthier immune system. Here are some suggestions.

  1. The most common way of getting infected is by touching things in public, so you must wash your hands frequently. The virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 mins, but a lot can happen in those 5-10 mins (you can rub your eyes or pick your nose unwittingly).
  2. Aside from washing your hands frequently, you can gargle with Betadine Sore Throat Gargle to eliminate or minimize the germs while they are still in your throat (before dripping down to your lungs).
  3. Improve your immune system and also take Vitamin C.
  4. Take extra care and drink plenty of water.

Development of the Novel Corona Virus Vaccine

As of the moment, there is NO VACCINE AGAINST THE NOVEL CORONA VIRUS (2019-nCov). The video circulating from Australia is just an announcement that they are able to copy the virus and this will be used in the process of study and development of a potential vaccine.

Before a vaccine for the Novel Corona Virus is used on humans it will undergo development and testing for safety. You cannot just use it without the test because it might backfire.

Personal Message as a Member of the Green Party of the Philippines on the Novel Corona Virus Outbreak

In my personal opinion as a member of the emerging GPP – Green Party of the Philippines, I would like to again encourage everyone to exercise extreme precautions and be healthy. It is the flu season and this makes most people sick with cough and colds.

Wear a mask if necessary, hydrate yourselves, drink Vitamin C and avoid travel outside of the country or in areas with infection. Be updated on news about the Novel Corona Virus and about sharing fake and unconfirmed news which might result in panic.

It is also highly recommended to suspend any travel and acceptance of visitors from China, particularly in the heavy infected areas. We need to exercise precaution on this matter because admittedly we are not ready and may not be capable to really contain an outbreak when it becomes full-blown.

Keep safe everyone.

FALSE on your “Doctor’s Advice About Wuhan Corona Virus” No major news agency or health officials has given the same advice.
– It is smaller in size 125nm not 400nm
– survive in metal surface? how about plastic, wood, marble? does not explain
– normal laundry detergent will kill it? maybe high temperature and bleach
– no reliable source has said it will die in direct sunlight
Which then makes the above “Dr’s advice” questionable.
Some of the advice may be true but people will think all is true and give them a false security.
