The Environmental Management Bureau- Department of Environment and Natural Resources (EMB-DENR) enjoins the nation in the celebration of June 5, 2019 as the World Environment Day and the month of June 2019 as the Philippine Environment Month, with the theme, “Beat Air Pollution”.
World Environment Day, which was first held in 1974, is the United Nation’s principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. In the Philippines, the celebration lasts for a month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237, signed in 1988, declaring the whole month of June, as the Philippine Environment Month. The lead agency for the month-long celebration is the DENR.
The DENR is also the lead implementing agency of Republic Act 8749, or the Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999, a comprehensive policy and program which aims to achieve and maintain healthy air for all Filipinos, while minimizing the possible associated negative impacts on the country’s economy. In compliance to the said Act, the priority activities of the Department, include the monitoring of the compliance of firms and industries, operationalization of Airshed Governing Boards, as well as calibration and maintenance of air quality monitoring stations nationwide.
This year’s celebration of World Environment Day and the Philippine Environment Month, encourages everyone to understand what air pollution is, how it affects our health and environment, and to take action to improve the air around us.
